COACHING BUILT AROUND YOU

Your game.
A clear plan forward.

Good coaching starts with understanding the golfer. Your experience, goals and time to practice shape the instruction and the next step.

Find your starting point.

Choose the path that fits today. Your plan develops with your skills, interests and goals.

NEW TO GOLF

A confident start in the game.

Build a foundation that helps you enjoy practice and feel comfortable taking your first steps onto the course.

Plan my first lesson
Start with you
We talk about what brings you to golf, your equipment and where you can practice. A few simple tasks help us choose a comfortable starting point.
Build the foundation
Learn to handle the club, set up and make contact. Putting, short shots and manageable targets connect each skill to playing the game.
Look for progress
Notice whether you can set up with less help, explain the task and repeat it across several attempts. We revisit it at the next session and try a different target.
Take it into play
Work toward a short course experience from suitable tees, with basic etiquette, pace of play and a simple plan for your next practice.

RETURN & IMPROVE

Turn practice into progress.

Whether you are coming back after time away or working through a recurring miss, your plan begins with the game you have today.

Build my practice plan
Understand your game
Discuss the shots and situations that cost you confidence. Observe contact, starting direction and flight across several shots, alongside your time for practice.
Choose a useful priority
Work on one clear skill with a demonstration, purposeful tasks and feedback you can use. Adjust the challenge as your understanding develops.
Check what carries over
Repeat the task at a later session, then change the target, club or situation. We look for a more dependable pattern and decisions you can make for yourself.
Connect practice and play
Use what happened on the course to shape the next session. Build a realistic routine across full swing, short game and putting around the areas you need most.

JUNIOR DEVELOPMENT

Grow skills. Keep the joy.

A child’s interests, readiness and confidence guide the experience. We develop golf skills while making room for movement, other sports and the enjoyment of play.

Plan a junior lesson
Play and explore
Meet the child and parent or guardian, learn what the player enjoys and choose manageable equipment. Younger beginners start with playful movement and simple target exploration.
Learn through doing
Introduce achievable putting, chipping and striking tasks as the player is ready. Offer appropriate choices, short explanations and time to try, with encouragement for effort and discovery.
Notice growing independence
Look for willingness to participate, safe habits, understanding and skills the player can repeat. Invite the child’s feedback and adjust when the task is too easy or frustrating.
Choose the next experience
Progress toward suitable on-course play and new challenges. Friendly competition can follow when it fits the player’s interest and readiness; enjoyment and continued participation remain central.

FAMILY & FRIENDS

Different golfers. A shared game.

Parents, partners, children and grandparents can learn together while each person works toward something meaningful.

Plan a lesson together
Hear every voice
Ask each golfer what they enjoy and want to learn. Agree on a safe space, suitable equipment and an activity everyone can take part in.
Share the experience
Use a common target or game while adapting distance, equipment and the task. Adults have their own worthwhile challenge alongside the children.
Recognize individual progress
Each person shares a discovery, a skill to revisit or something they want to try. We look for learning and confidence at each golfer’s starting point.
Make time to play again
Leave with a simple activity and a realistic next outing. Develop toward enjoyable rounds together, using appropriate tees and respect for other players.

PREPARE TO COMPETE

Practice with playing in mind.

For golfers who want to become more dependable on the course or prepare for club and local competition, we connect skill work with decisions and routines.

Discuss my playing goals
Establish the starting point
Review recent playing experiences and scores or shot patterns you already track. Agree on a specific goal and the time available to work toward it.
Practice the situations
Use targets, different lies where available and manageable scoring challenges. Develop a pre-shot routine, sensible shot selection and a way to reset after mistakes.
Review the evidence
Compare several sessions and rounds rather than one result. Discuss contact, misses, decisions and how the routine holds up as the task becomes more demanding.
Plan the next challenge
Choose suitable playing opportunities and a practice schedule. Review what each experience teaches us, then adjust the next goal together.

We agree on the next step together and revisit it as you learn. Session length, pace and activities are adapted to the golfer.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM YOUR LESSON

Assess your game.

We discuss your goals and observe your shots, including setup, contact and ball flight. Together, we establish the lesson’s focus.

Develop the skill.

Clear demonstrations, purposeful tasks and specific feedback help you understand the work. Your questions and observations guide the instruction.

Apply what you learn.

We review what changed, check your understanding and agree on your next practice task. You leave knowing what to work on and what to observe.

GOLF FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY

DEVELOPMENT COMES FIRST

Individual progress.
Shared enjoyment.

Activities match each golfer’s experience and development. For the youngest golfers, we begin with playful movement and simple exploration. As confidence and skills develop, we introduce more purposeful golf tasks. Children have a voice in what they learn. Adults work toward their own goals within the shared experience.

I recognize specific effort and progress, offer a clear next step and listen when a player feels frustrated. We practice resetting after mistakes, encouraging one another and respecting the course and game.

PROGRAM EXPERIENCE

I created and taught the Get Moving Initiative, pairing junior clubs with introductory lessons, and developed a high-school golf program. That experience informs my approach to welcoming new players.

MEET YOUR COACH

Randy Thornburg.
A lifelong game.

I’m a PGA Associate, Army veteran, husband and father of two. My background as an AH-64 Apache crew chief and mechanic, along with an FAA Airframe & Powerplant credential and business leadership experience, has shaped how I prepare, communicate and help people develop.

I’m moving from the private-equity world into a career centered on golf and family. The birth of my son strengthened that purpose: to raise him in the game and share the lessons, relationships and time together that golf makes possible.

My coaching draws on PGA Coach’s American Development Model and Positive Coaching Alliance training: understand the person, match the challenge to the player and build skills in an encouraging environment. I’m continuing my professional development toward full PGA of America membership.
